03/16/2010 - Chicago, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Chicago Blackhawks confirmed Tuesday that defenseman Brian Campbell will be sidelined into the playoffs after suffering fractures to his clavicle and ribs at the hands of a hit by Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin on Sunday.
Campbell was hit him from behind during the first period of Chicago's 4-3 overtime loss at United Center and would conceivably be out through at least the first round of the playoffs should the returning timetable of 7-to-8 weeks hold up.
Blackhawks team physician Dr. Michael Terry issued the following statement Tuesday.
"Brian Campbell suffered a clavicle fracture and a rib fracture on Sunday. He will likely avoid surgery and we anticipate a full recovery. He should be ready to play in approximately seven to eight weeks."
Ovechkin was handed a two-game suspension for the incident on Monday for what the NHL called "a reckless hit." He was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct.
The 30-year-old Campbell is in his second full season with Chicago after signing a long-term deal in 2008. In 67 games for the Blackhawks, Campbell has compiled seven goals, 31 assists and a plus-17 rating.
Before he was felled by injury, Campbell had the second-longest consecutive games-played streak among active NHL defenseman at 388.
