12/23/2006 - Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Patrik Elias and Zach Parise had a goal and an assist each while Martin Brodeur turned away 35 shots to help the New Jersey Devils down the Washington Capitals, 4-1, at the Verizon Center.
Brian Gionta and Travis Zajac both scored a goal for the Devils, who moved in front of the idle New York Rangers for first place in the Atlantic Division.
Chris Clark scored the lone goal for Washington, which has dropped two in a row. Brent Johnson allowed four goals on 24 shots in defeat.
The Devils opened up the scoring with a power-play marker 5:31 into the second stanza. Parise gained control of the disc behind the Washington goal line before stepping out and sending a feed to Zajac at the left side of the net. Zajac's initial try hit off the side of the cage, but he picked up his own rebound and stuffed it home.
Clark tied the contest at 1-1 midway through the stanza. Clark's first shot from the left circle was saved, but the puck kicked into the slot, off a defender and back to him. The right winger then punched it home for his 13th tally of the season.
New Jersey reclaimed the lead with 1:06 to play in the second, though, as Lukowich's shot from the point caromed off Elias in front and past Johnson.
Gionta's dazzling goal early in the third extended the advantage to two goals. With the Devils moving out on a rush, Gionta took a pass from Scott Gomez as he flew into the zone, faked a forehand shot and the released a backhand that found room in the top shelf.
Parise iced the game midway through the third with a laser shot from the right circle that beat Johnson glove side.
