09/09/2007 - Columbus, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Columbus Crew's 2007 Major League Soccer playoff hopes suffered a damaging blow with a 1-0 loss to the Chicago Fire in the pouring rain on Saturday at home.

Not only do the Fire (8-10-5) pass the Crew in the Eastern standings by two points with a game in hand, but they jumped over them for the league's last playoff spot thanks to Paulo Wanchope's game-winner in the 65th minute.

Along with the loss, the Crew (6-8-10) suffered two other major losses to their lineup. Leading scorer and the catalyst of the team's offense, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, left Saturday's game after 10 minutes with a hamstring injury a minute after receiving a yellow card for a hard foul on Chicago star Cuauhtemoc Blanco. The injury is not thought to be serious, but Schelotto will still miss the team's next game because of yellow card accumulation.

Suspended for the next game, also because of yellow card accumulation is defensive star Frankie Hejduk, who received his booking in the 37th minute.

The game started with the Crew having the better of the early play. Schelotto fired a free kick into the Fire penalty area in the second minute, but a Rusty Pierce header went just high.

About eight minutes later Schelotto tweaked his hamstring and left the game, effectively ending his team's chances of maintaining any offensive pressure the rest of the match.

Pierce left the game with a similar injury to Schelotto's in the 19th minute with conditions on the rain soaked field worsening.

Blanco had the Fire's first legitimate scoring opportunity about a minute later when he fired a free kick from 25 yards out. But the effort, which cleared the Crew wall while dipping toward the near post corner of the net, was saved by Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer.

At the half hour mark, the Crew began pressuring in the offensive third, but were unable to get any high quality chances on goalkeeper Matt Pickens.

The Fire took the momentum about 10 minutes before the break after Wanchope and Chris Rolfe broke into the Crew area, but a Wanchope shot was saved by Hesmer, keeping the game scoreless.

The game was suspended in the 39th minute, however, after a lightning strike, effectively ending the half. Both teams came out after the delay and played out the final six-plus minutes, but there were no real chances by either side.

The Crew narrowly missed going up a goal less than 20 minutes after the break when a Marcos Gonzales diving header off a corner kick struck the post and was cleared by the Fire defense.

Less than two minutes later the Fire made the Crew pay for their missed opportunity by taking the lead on Wanchope's second goal of his MLS career.

Colombian defender Wilman Conde, who signed with the Fire last month, and was added to the team's roster this week, fired a great service from the defensive third of the field to Wanchope behind the Crew defense. Wanchope took control of the long ball and broke in on Hesmer alone before slotting the ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Despite out shooting the Fire 16-7 in the game, Columbus stays winless in its previous six league fixtures. It will have a chance to improve it's position in the standings next Saturday at Kansas City while the Fire host Red Bull New York the same day.
