09/08/2007 - London, England (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - England's EURO 2008 qualifying campaign got a huge boost on Saturday at Wembley Stadium as the much-maligned Three Lions recorded a resounding 3-0 win over Israel in Group E play.
The result is especially welcome for embattled manager Steve McClaren, who has come under heavy criticism for his lack of results with the club after taking over following last summer's FIFA World Cup.
A poor run of play in the spring, which included a 0-0 draw against Israel in Tel Aviv, can be put behind the club if it can continue to put on displays like the one it provided the English crowd on Saturday.
Shaun Wright-Phillips notched his first goal for England in the 20th minute, with Michael Owen and defender Micah Richards tallying goals in the second half to complete the scoring.
England totally controlled the first half but only had the goal from Wright- Phillips to show for their efforts.
Joe Cole created the opportunity when he won possession of the ball near the Israel box and played a pass in behind the Israel back line for Wright- Phillips. The Chelsea midfielder timed his run perfectly and slotted his shot past keeper Dudu Aouate to put England ahead.
England's one-goal advantage was soon doubled four minutes after the restart. Gareth Barry slid a pass to Owen at the edge of the area, and with his back to the goal, Owen did the rest. The Newcastle striker took a touch to gain space and quickly fired a perfect shot into the upper corner of the net for his 38th career goal for England.
The visitors were unable to find their way back into the game, and Richards put the finishing touches on the match for England when he nodded home a Steven Gerrard corner to make the lead 3-0.
The win moves England into a tie with Israel at 17 points, and just one point behind second-place Russia, who knocked off Macedonia 3-0 on Saturday.
England has played one less game than Israel, and faces Russia in a huge encounter at Wembley on Wednesday. The other game in Group E saw leaders Croatia down Estonia 2-0 to keep a two-point lead on Russia.
In Group A, Serbia played to a 0-0 draw with Finland, while Poland and Portugal battled to a 2-2 draw.
France and Italy squared off in a rematch of the 2006 World Cup final in Group B, but put on a disappointing show in a 0-0 draw. The result keeps France on top of the group but Scotland moved into second place, one point clear of Italy, after defeating Lithuania 3-1. Ukraine's efforts at qualifying for Austria and Switzerland took a big hit as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Georgia, leaving them five points behind second-place Scotland.
Norway took over second place in Group C with a 1-0 win over Moldova, while Turkey was held 2-2 by Malta. Bosnia-Herzegovina was the surprise team of the group to this point, but dropped a 1-0 decision to Hungary to fall five points behind group leaders Greece.
Germany continued to dominate Group D as they recorded a 2-0 win over Wales to stay five points ahead of the Czech Republic, who beat hopeless San Marino on Saturday 3-0. Ireland, meanwhile fell three points behind the Czechs as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Slovakia.
In Group F, leaders Sweden played to a 0-0 draw with Denmark, but they remained on top of the group because second-place Northern Ireland was surprised 1-0 by Latvia. Spain was also surprised, drawing with Iceland 1-1.
Romania downed Belarus 3-1 to stay three points ahead of the Netherlands, who defeated Bulgaria 2-0 to move into second place. In the other game in the group, Luxembourg lost for the eighth time in eight games as they fell 3-0 to Slovenia.

Huskers' Lucky hospitalized for undisclosed reason
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska running back Marlon Lucky was hospitalized Monday for undisclosed reasons after Lincoln police responded to a call at his residence.
The Nebraska athletic department said in a release Monday that Lucky was admitted Sunday night.
MySportsbook.com has the Cornhuskers listed at +2500 to win the BCS National Championship odds.
A nursing supervisor at the hospital said all questions about Lucky were being referred to the athletic department. The athletic department said there would be no further comment from the department or Lucky's family.
A Lincoln Police spokesman said officers responded to a call at Lucky's residence 11:30 p.m. Sunday. The spokesman said he didn't know Lucky's condition at the time he was taken to the hospital.
Lucky, from North Hollywood, Calif., started six games last season as a sophomore and was the team's second-leading rusher, with 728 yards and six touchdowns. He also caught 32 passes for 383 yards. He averaged 19.1 yards on eight kickoff returns.

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP
With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at MySportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.
There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
