Isles try to end road woes in tough test with Canucks

Hockey Betting Lines

03/16/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Vancouver Canucks will try to extend their seven-game home winning streak when they take on a New York Islanders club that will be looking to avoid a ninth straight setback on the road tonight at GM Place.

Vancouver has been on fire since the Olympic break, going 6-1-1 over its last eight games. The Canucks have won the first two contests of a five-game homestand to extend a home winning streak that is sandwiched around an NHL- record 14-game road trip.

The Canucks improved to 25-7-1 at home this year with a 3-1 triumph over Calgary on Sunday that pushed Vancouver's lead over Colorado for first place in the Northwest Division to five points.

Daniel and Henrik Sedin both had a goal and an assist, Ryan Kesler scored and Mikael Samuelsson had an assist as all four Vancouver skaters extended their respective point streaks. Kesler owns the NHL's longest active run at 13 games, a span in which he has amassed six goals and nine assists. Daniel Sedin, meanwhile, has three tallies and 13 helpers over a 10-game run.

Samuelsson, named the NHL's First Star of the Week on Monday, has nine goals and four assists on a seven-game streak and Henrik Sedin has three goals and 10 points over his five-game run.

Roberto Luongo stopped 32 shots for Vancouver, which got all three of its goals in the first period.

"Obviously we came out strong and were playing really well as a team. I don't know what happened after that," Luongo said. "Fortunately we were able to hold on,"

Though they dropped a 2-1 shootout test at New York a season ago, the Canucks are 3-0-2 in their last five games versus the Islanders. Vancouver hasn't lost at home to New York since March 19. 1999, winning three in a row over the Isles as the host.

New York hits the road for four straight having not won as the guest since Jan. 9. The Islanders did just go 2-0-1 on a recent homestand, winning the last two contests to record back-to-back victories for the first time since a four-game win streak from Jan. 9-18.

The Islanders concluded the stand with a 4-1 victory over Toronto, holding the Maple Leafs scoreless on seven power-play attempts while getting a pair of special-teams goals themselves. Matt Moulson notched a power-play tally and Richard Park scored short-handed to go along with an assist.

"We're feeling like we owe each other some kind of results and consistency," said Isles goaltender Martin Biron, who made 26 saves. "That's what we're trying to go. Sometimes you just have that sense that you're loose and you're going to play well. We have that right now."

Tim Jackman and Frans Nielsen also scored for the Islanders, who are seven points behind in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

NFL Football Betting : Odds on NFL Division to Win the Super Bowl

NFL Super Bowl Betting

The AFC South and the NFC East are the favorite divisions to have the next Super Bowl champ among them in the NFL betting odds. But more down to the point, these football odds are in favor of the Indianapolis Colts, by far the strongest team in the AFC South, and the Dallas Cowboys of the NFC East.

Most sports fans would agree that these two teams top the list to win it all before the season even begins. In the BetUS Sportsbook football futures, the Colts are +800 in the odds to win the Super Bowl, while the Cowboys are sitting at +1000 and the Super Bowl XLIV champions New Orleans Saints at +900. In the AFC South, the Colts won the division for five straight years after the 2002 realignment, before the Tennessee Titans won it in 2008. But the Colts came back strong in 2009 to win the division again en route to the Super Bowl. The Cowboys are the favorite to win the NFC East, as well as to advance far into the post season. The Cowboys won the division last season before their horrendous loss in the NFC Divisional playoff to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. But the ‘Boys will take that loss humbly and be ready for the playoffs this time around.

The NFC South is also very strong, at +600 in the NFL futures, considering that it is home to the defending Super Bowl champions. However, some predictions have the Atlanta Falcons with possibilities of claiming the divisional title this season in place of the Saints, as no team has won back-to-back division championships since the division realignment took place. Let’s not overlook the AFC North at +500. As TO goes to Cincinnati to join Chad OchoCinco and Adam “Pac-Man” Jones, this team looks to claim the division title again. And it is likely they will do so. The Bengals lost in the AFC Wild Card spot in a hard-fought battle against the New York Jets last season. Lest not forget the Pittsburgh Steelers, the XLII Super Bowl Champions… All these teams present interesting odds and matchups for the upcoming season, but the safest and surest bet seems to be with the Colts in the AFC South and the Cowboys in the NFC East. Chiefs' Treen Green out for Sunday's game

How long Trent Green will remain sidelined is unknown. Coach Herm Edwards said Monday he will miss a second straight start Sunday when the Chiefs host the San Francisco 49ers.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Green was going into a feet-first hook slide when he was knocked unconscious by a thunderous, head-snapping hit from Cincinnati's Robert Geathers.

Oddsmakers at online sportsbook MySportsbook.com currently have the Chiefs listed as 7-point favorites versus the 49ers.

The 49ers got beat by Philadelphia 38-24 as a 6.5-point underdog last week. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (42.5).

Alex Smith completed 27-of-46 passes for 293 yards with a touchdown. Michael Robinson rushed for 29 yards and a pair of touchdowns on five carries.

The Chiefs lost 9-6 to Denver last week as an 11-point underdog. The combined score was well UNDER the posted over/under total (38).
